So I have this festival listed as a "Call the Babysitter" event and I'll be there Friday with a sitter at home, but both Saturday and Sunday my daughter will be there with me during the day, so you could call it a "Bring the Kids" event as well. I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of you who don't know what Pitchfork is. It's one of the most viewed and influential websites for new music reviews, mostly indie music, very snotty. It's kind of like all the employees from all the shuttered independent record stores who used to give you the stink eye for buying the "wrong" record are now working at Pitchfork and still trying to give you the stink eye from some cubicle behind a keyboard. Despite the snobbery it's probably the best festival going and a great way to see a years worth of new music in three days.
Tomorrow I'll post my preview for Saturday and Sunday.
Check me at Twitter for live updates and photos, #musicforparents.
If you don't already have tickets, they are releasing a limited amount today at the box office on Ashland Ave. starting at 11am.
Friday July 16 (gates at 3 p.m.):
recommended in RED
all the shows with a (b) after them are comedians
3:30 Sharon Van Etten (a)
4:00 The Tallest Man on Earth (c) some folky guy, probably boring and not worth the extra money you're going to pay the babysitter to get here early
4:35 El-P (a) indie hip-hop, yes there is such a thing, it's not "thuggy" or B96 radio friendly, it's actually pretty cool but you never know how hip-hop will translate live, always a crapshoot, and it'll still be light out which just doesn't seem right for this music, again save the babysitter money
5:30 Liars (c) it's tough to get these guys but once you take the time it's worth it, think a denser more rocking Spoon
5:45 Hannibal Buress (b)
6:25 Robyn (a) imagine if Brittany Spears were cool, talented, really good looking and wrote great music, OK now forget about it, that person doesn't exist but that's the closest description I can think of for Robyn
6:30 Wyatt Cenac (b)
7:15 Michael Showalter (b)
7:20 Broken Social Scene (c) canadian super group, they all broke off on their own and made great records but still get back together as BSS, guaranteed to be a great show, lots of winding guitars and melodies
8:00 Eugene Mirman (b)
8:30 Modest Mouse (a) one of my favorite bands, they've been around for a while, great musicians, quirky and hooky at the same time
For the music fan who falls somewhere between "skinny jeans" and "dockers". Do you listen to the Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel for the 13,675th time on your local radio station just in hopes of hearing the new Black Keys song? Then we can help. Do you have to Google bands that are on Yo Gabba Gabba? Then you can be saved. When people ask what new music you're digging, are the only songs that come to mind "the one from that commercial"? Then we'll point you in the right direction.
