Yesterday I pointed out a band, Purple Apple, that didn't have to work too hard to get noticed (how hard can 12 year olds work? i found out they are on a two week hiatus for summer camp), but that isn't the norm. Most bands work hard for years before they get a break. YAWN is one of those bands.
Up until a couple months ago YAWN were just one of the many Chicago bands doing all the right things but not getting much attention. That is until a local industry insider happened to come across their music. He gave them a call out of the blue and asked if they were playing the South by Southwest festival in Austin, which is the biggest new band industry showcase convention in the country. They said no. Robert (industry insider) told them that if they did happen to get a slot down there that he would put them on as an opener for one of his company's (The Fader/Cornerstone) private party industry showcases, which is one of the most sought after guest lists at the fest.
YAWN said they would be there. Smart move. They played the showcase, everybody loved them, Pitchfork picked up on it, they've opened for some big indie bands since and now have a manager and a national tour. Still not totally the norm but close.

You can see them this Saturday at a "Bring the Kids" event, WestFest (Chicago & Damen) at 1pm on the main stage and decide for yourself if they deserve the fast rising hype. Or you can wait until next year and see them on the big stage of Lollapolooza or Pitchfork or at a sold out show at a bigger venue.

For the music fan who falls somewhere between "skinny jeans" and "dockers". Do you listen to the Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel for the 13,675th time on your local radio station just in hopes of hearing the new Black Keys song? Then we can help. Do you have to Google bands that are on Yo Gabba Gabba? Then you can be saved. When people ask what new music you're digging, are the only songs that come to mind "the one from that commercial"? Then we'll point you in the right direction.
