Song of the Day #11, 12, 13

Sloppy, fuzzy and a little bit scuzzy.  Once in a while you have to let that summer breeze blow on by and go full in with a thunderstorm or two.  That's what Chicago's late Spring, early Summer has been.  I'm going to follow that trend and diverge from the summery pop tunes and recommend a few songs that might be considered a little dirtier.

Wavves - "Post Acid"
free download here
I'm pretty sure that "post acid" isn't being used as a metaphor, so let's put this in the fuzzy category.

Black Lips - "Before You Judge Me"
free download here
This definitely sounds sloppy, in a good way.  I've seen these guys live and they play that way too.

Gauntlet Hair - "I was Thinking"
download it here , just scroll down a bit to the best songs of '10 so far, it's #3.
Scuzzy.  I'm not sure why, maybe it's the reverb guitars mixed with that stupid metal sounding band name.  The hook is the guitar riff that runs though the song, pretty cool.  It took me a couple listens to get it so don't give up on it after one listen.

Passion Pit

As long as I'm bending your ear toward Mates of State doing Girls, I might as well keep it on a roll with cover songs.

Passion Pit doing Smashing Pumpkins' "Tonight, Tonight".

That Pumpkins song was always sort of a guilty pleasure song for me.  On the website it's described as a "daring" version of the song.  That's being a little redix, but definitely worth checking out.

It's on the same site I directed you to a couple weeks ago for the Shins doing Squeeze.  If you downloaded that then you're already in the system, just enter your email and they'll send it to you.  If not, sign up, there's some other good stuff on there now.
Download it free here (levi's pioneer sessions)

If you can brave the Taste of Chicago crowd then you should check out Passion Pit on the 4th of July.  It's at Petrillo Music Shell, noon o'clock.  It's a "Bring the Kids" show.

Song of the Day #10

Mates of State - "Laura"

download Here

One of my favorite bands playing a cover of one of my favorite songs from last year, "Laura" by Girls.  Mates of state are a husband and wife duo from Lawrence, KS that plays mostly drums and keyboard, but don't let that scare you away, think Matt & Kim or The Ting Tings or Local H (nah).  They have a new album of cover tunes that just came out, Crushes, and it's only $5 here.  On the album they cover some pretty cool tunes by Death Cab for Cutie, Belle and Sebastian, Mars Volta and this one from Daniel Johnston...

Check out the video from the original song "Laura" by Girls.  Great song.

Chillwave, Freak Folk, Neo-Psychedelia...zzzzzzz

All of those genre terms have caught fire in the last year and a half or so.  I don't get it and I couldn't figure out why.  Until now.  You probably read a bunch of "best of 09" lists at the end of last year and wondered who is this Animal Collective and why haven't I heard it.  The answer is probably because it's pretty boring.  People talk more about how they like it than they actually play it, so it's doubtful someone put it on at a party or you heard it at a bar, in the car, while shopping, etc.  You'll get a big argument from people who like these bands though. Don't let them make you feel bad or out of touch, you have a good excuse (see below).
Here's my list of top 5 bands you're supposed to like but probably don't
1.  Animal Collective
2.  Joanna Newsom
3.  Beach House
4.  Grizzly Bear
5.  Fleet Foxes

They all at times can lack melody, or be a little repetitive and droning or have distant vocals.  Before I was a parent I had no problem with this, there was plenty of time in my life for so called experimental music.  You need patience to listen to these bands before it sinks in.  I use up most of my patience these days on being a parent.

This is what set the lightbulb off for me as to why I don't "get" these bands.  I'm sure all the parents out there can relate.  Think of Animal Collective as Stewie,  they probably giggle when someone like me says they hate them.

Thanks Katherine!  Now I don't feel like I have to hide my disdain for those bands.

Today I'm taking on the flagship of the alternative format for terrestrial radio.  Los Angeles' home for "Kevin and Bean" and the Weenie Roast.  My record so far is 3-1.  My shuffle last week was pretty weak but I'm feeling it for this week.  We'll see...

Song of the Day #9

Tokyo Police Club - "Breakneck Speed"
Champ
Melodic, nerdy and catchy.  The exact opposite of Panda Bear, Grizzly Bear or anything you would hear on the Gorilla vs. Bear podcast.  Throw Animal Collective in there too.  But not too far off from Bear Hands or Bear vs. Shark.  well kind of off from Bear vs. Shark which is more hardcore leaning.  Does the "Superbowl Shuffle" by Da Bears count as a band?  If it does then everything is opposite of that.

Album of the Week #3

Rogue Wave -  Permalight (3/2/10)
Permalight

You just can't help rooting for this veteran band from Oakland.  This is a fun, upbeat, pop, multi-intrumental long player with a positive attitude.  In their own words it's about "triumph over tragedy".  In the time between their last record, Asleep at Heaven's Gate (2007), and this newest, their former bassist died in an apartment fire, the drummer had to find a living kidney donor and the singer/guitarist slipped two discs, was paralyzed for a while and lost all feeling in his right hand.  I don't know how they did it but after all that they made a brilliant record.  I recently saw them at Lincoln Hall and it was one of those shows that really rejuvenates and ignites your thirst for live music.  Check out "I'll Never Leave You" from the album.   Again, in their own words,

"a simple acoustic tune that finds Rogue (the singer) coming to grips with the overwhelming emotions that come with young fatherhood".

There was an excellent documentary recently made about the drummer and his quest for a kidney on P.O.V. which aired on PBS.  Nicest guy and band in the world!  Look for it, it's called D Tour.  Having watched the documentary, my wife just had to give the drummer a hug after the show.  I gave him the cool guy nod.  I panicked.  Yes, after having worked with everyone from The Ramones to Beyonce, Pitbull to Brian Wilson, I still panic when I meet a band as a fan.

Pavement tickets

Pavement is playing Millenium Park on September 13th.  If you didn't get tickets to see them at Pitchfork this is just as good of an option, if not better.  Pavement hasn't had a new album, for most of you, since you were the non-parent giving the evil eye to the person with the screaming kid at happy hour.  1999.
No Age, a really good newer band, will be opening the show at 7pm (download 3 No Age songs Here, go for "Teen Creeps" first).  Tickets go on sale today at 11am, seats are $40 and the lawn is $15 (steal).

Free download of Pavement's "Rattled by the Rush" and a live recording of "Heckler Spray/In the Mouth of a Desert" Here

I heard this song at Chava yesterday while I was being a "stay-at-home-go- to-the-coffee-shop-a-lot-visit-the-park-get-funny-looks-from-stay-at-home-moms" dad.

Friday shuffle vs. Chirp

CHIRP Radio
These guys are going to kick my ass.  I'm being honest about my shuffle and posting whatever happens to comes up in the order it shuffles (unless it's a blank hidden track or something like that).  Chirp has a great library and a tendency to pick the right combo of songs.

so here we go:

CHIRP:  10a.m. Friday June 18th, 2010
10:02  Boscoe - "If I Had My Way"
10:07 Jamie Lidell - "I Can Love Again"
10:09  Arab Strap - "Here We Go"
10:14  Kate Bush - "The Big Sky"
10:20  The Gaslight Anthem - "Stay Lucky"
10:23  The Hold Steady - "The Swish"
10:27  Led Zeppelin - "Four Sticks"
10:33  The Depreciation Guild - "November"
10:37  The Strokes - "Reptilia"
10:43  Kurt Vile - "The Finder"
10:45  Janalle Monae - "Cold War"

My shuffle from Macbook ITunes 11:00 a.m. 6/18/2010
Land of the El Caminos - "Keep On" (old friend's band)
D Generation - "Falling" (worked this band)
Vijay Kishore - "Never Ends" (who?)
De La Soul - "Buddy" feat./Jungle Brothers/Q Tip (yes!)
Louis Armstrong - "Hello, Dolly"
Barenaked Ladies - "Sound of Your Voice" (meh)
Pavement - "Stop Breathin" (Pitchfork!!!!!!!)
The Fiery Furnaces - "Sweet Spots" (a little bit overlooked)
John Scofield & Pat Matheny - "Quiet Rising" (way to bring it down :(   )
Neil Diamond - "You Baby"
The Style Council - "Life at a Top People's Health Farm"

Yup, I lost.  surprisingly not by much though.
what's your shuffle of the day?

World Cup Mixtape

Ok, just as I'm starting to get into the World Cup, the US, who is a 10-1 favorite over Slovenia, is down 2 to nil. What's up  with "nil"?  I think I like it. If you're annoyed by those Vuvuzela horns while watching the cup, turn the volume off, download these mixtapes and enjoy. These are mixtapes from every continent, except Antartica, made to celebrate the event. You may think it's a little too "clubby" for us parents but give it a shot, high energy with cool beats. They are also great mixes to run to or workout to.

I like the South America mix best.

Song of the Day #8

The Radio Dept. - "Heaven's On Fire"

This is my favorite song at this exact moment, Wednesday 9:57a.m., on a sunny, low humidity morning in Chicago after I had a bowl of cereal and a really good pear.  If you find yourself in the same situation, I bet it will be your favorite too.

Download it free Here
just scroll down a bit until you get to the song, it's from the latest album Clinging to a Scheme.  It looks like you have to register with them but you don't, it works fine if you click on the download button.

I'm not going to say anything about the song so you get used to listening to my playlist on the right.  Click on the play button to get it started and decide for yourself if you like it or not.

Song of the Day #7

Fanzine - "Susan"

free download here

Lush music that sounds like the music you were listening to when you were passionate about music.  Yes, I just used "music" three times in one sentence.  The song reminds me of Miracle Legion.  Anyone remember them doing the theme song for the kids show "The Adventures of Pete and Pete"?  They did it under the name of Polaris.

Pete and Pete was one of the first kid shows I can remember that actually featured really cool music.  It was sort of a mix between Arrested Development, The Simpsons and Family Affair.  The fact that Syd Straw was featured in a couple episodes hooked me into watching a show that was below my age scale.  Some of the music they played in others included, The Apples in Stereo, Magnetic Fields, Luscious Jackson, Drop Nineteens, Tara Key, Poi Dog Pondering, Racecar...

Parent tip #2

Listen to internet radio.  The best Chicago internet radio station you should be listening to is Chirp.  You can check it out here (CHIRP Radio)

If you haven't listened to internet radio lately, or ever, then it's time to give it another try.  It used to sound "tinny" or the stream would cut in and out.  No longer.  It sounds great and you probably have a fast internet connection at home and work that prevents it from "buffering" or cutting out.

You can listen at work on your computer with the "pop up" player, just click on the tab on the website.  Or you can stream it at home and plug your computer into your stereo.  All you need is a connection cable that's two pronged on one side and one connector on the other.  If you like the music I'm featuring on the blog then you'll love this radio station.  They also have a free app on Itunes, so you can listen to it on your phone.  Listen to it on the "L", plug it into your car, your stereo or some portable speakers.  You can also listen on Android or Blackberry.

The station is run by some great people who used to work at WLUW and who know the ins and outs of the Chicago music scene.   CHIRP is also working to convince Congress and the FCC to remove existing barriers to the granting of low power FM radio licenses in urban areas, including Chicago, which means you'll be able to listen to it on traditional "terrestrial" radio if they are successful...and if you live really really close to the signal.

So check it out and you're guaranteed to find new music that will soon become your favorite and put you back on the path to musical bliss.

Song of the Day #6

The Shins - "Goodbye Girl"

download it here

The Shins doing Squeeze.  Love it.  It's part of the Levi's Pioneer sessions which are being released as free downloads.  All you have to do is give them your email.  I hope you all have a "dummy" email set up if you don't want to get emails from Levi's.  Even if you don't, so what, it's worth the music.  While you're there, check out some other great songs available from Dirty Projectors, Nas and The Swell Season.

If you don't already know, The Shins have been missing in action while James Mercer has been working on his side project with Danger Mouse, Broken Bells.  Definitely a worthy side project.

And yes, The Shins were on Yo Gabba Gabba

Song of the day #5

Stars - "Wasted Daylight"

Download the song free here

It's a good description of how I feel today after the Hawks celebration last night.  Congrats Hawks!  The song is light and airy and talks about staying in bed with the shades drawn.  It's an upbeat hangover cure, keep the Stanley Cup good vibes going.

Yes, I was one of the knuckleheads at Clark and Addison last night.  I'm the one wearing a shirt.

Album of the Week #2

LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening (5/18/10)

A funny thing happened to music terminology while you've been raising your kids, specifically there has been explosion of descriptive terms and genres, making it harder for the returning music fan to sift through.  It used to be so easy to describe a band like LCD Soundsystem.  You would have called them a "dance" band.  Now you would get an argument that they are Dance-Punk, Shit-Disco or one of a million other opinionated blogging descriptors.  While Ralph's World songs were being branded onto the part of your brain that let's you enjoy music, you missed New Wave, No Wave, Chillwave, Dancehall, Grime, Bassline, Nu Metal, Indie, Indie Rock, Indie Pop, Pop Punk, Mall Punk, Mashup, Crunk, Hyphee, Twee...  If you missed out on "Post Punk" then you have no idea what "Post Punk Revival" is reviving right now.

All you need to know about this record is that it's really good, it'll make your head bob uncontrollably, it's pretty much one guy, James Murphy, it's kind of dance, kind of electronic, kind of rock and he has a couple other really good albums that preceded this.  It might even cause you to "dance".  Just buy it and play it really loud.

My picks from the album are "All I Want" and "Pow Pow".
Anyone remember TV Pow from Ray Rayner?  Maybe that show is where my love of puppets started.  powpowpowpowpowpowpow

BTW - LCD has an older song that could be the theme for this blog, "I'm Losing My Edge", except that he was being sarcastic. For the lost parent unfortunately, it's dead on.

Lollapalooza 2010

They just released the schedule and single day tickets here.

Check out the Kidzapalooza lineup here .  This is a "bring the kids" event!  They will love it!
I know this girl will be there.

Here's a link to some of my picks.

Parent tip #1

She + Him was great last night.  The band that Zooey Deschanel and M Ward have backing them is really tight and talented and her voice carried perfect all the way to the back of the park, where I was sitting. A whole lot of the skinny jean crowd was there last night, way more people probably than records the band has sold.  I'm not sure where they all parked their fixed gear bikes.

Apparently the Monday night shows and Millennium are really popular now.  I arrived about an hour before the first band played and still had to squeeze in a spot in the back.  If you go, go before the loop crowd gets out of work at 5 and set up space.  It really doesn't matter sound wise where you sit, it sounds great everywhere, but if you want to see the band you have to be in the front half of the yard.

my daughter was sleepy by the end...

song of the day #4

She and Him "Thieves"

Check them out tonight for a free show at Millennium Park, 6pm w/ Hallows.  It's the band that features Zooey Deschanel and M Ward.  Pretty good for an "actor" band.  She has a pretty cool voice and M Ward is always great.  Soooo much better than The Bacon Brothers, 40 odd foot grunts (Russell Crowe), Dogstar (Keanu Reaves), Billy Bob Thorton, 30 Seconds to Mars (Jared Leto), Scarlett Johansson...
The ones that aren't that bad are Dead Man's Bones (Ryan Gosling), Phantom Planet/Coconut Records (Jason Schwartzman)...

You can download the single at this link for free.

Song of the day #3

Interpol "Lights"

Since I just showed you the scary puppet video for Interpol's "Evil", it's a good reminder that they have a new album due out in September.  I'll be grabbing that no doubt.  It took a while for them to grow on me but it was well worth the patience.

Here's the link for a free download of the new single:

Kid Distraction #1

An example of how easy it is to get distracted away from adult music.  How can you not watch a squirrel and a singing bologna sandwich?  But then again, I have an unusual affinity for puppets.  you may feel differently.

And here is the best puppet video ever that's not for kids...

Song of the Day #2

Frightened Rabbit - "Swim Until You Can't See Land"

I haven't been able to get this song out of my head for months...that's a good thing.  I saw them at Do Division last year (which BTW, should be a bring the kids event, http://www.do-divisionstreetfest.com/fest/music/), and they are one of those bands that really seems to be having a good time on stage, which makes you have a better time, which makes them perform better, which makes you have an even better time, which...

Do Division is today and tomorrow.  Music starts at 1pm both days so plenty of time to catch some music with the kids in tow.  It's booked by the Empty Bottle and Subterranean peeps, so you know the music will be worth checking out even if you haven't heard of them.

Frightened Rabbit will be at Lolla this summer.  Here's the video to the single from the latest album.

Friday Shuffle vs. Q101

This week I'll be taking on my old roommate, Tim Virgin and Q101.  He's on air in the afternoons and he's the music director, which means he's responsible for every song on the station that gets played.  For those of you who didn't know, DJ's at radio stations have nothing to do with what songs are aired, except when the DJ happens to also be the Music Director or Program Director.    Last week I took on WXRT and the duo of John Farneda (MD) and Norm Winer (PD), they say that the DJ's get to vote every week on new songs added to the playlist but it still comes down to what Norm wants and doesn't want.  I think my shuffle beat them pretty handily.  You may disagree, but you may also really like The Fray.

So here we go:  I present Virgin and WKQX, 101.1 (Chicago's Alternative).
3:01 Pearl Jam "Better Man"
3:05 Deftones "Diamond Eyes"
3:09 311 "Don't Tread On Me"
3:19 Sick Puppies "You're Going Down"
3:22 Fratellis "Chelsea Dagger"
3:25 Rage Against the Machine "Killing In the Name"
3:30 Garbage "Stupid Girl"
3:34 Three Days Grace "The Good Life"
3:37 Linkin Park "Crawlin"
3:40 Red Hot Chili Peppers "Breaking the Girl"
3:53 Korn "Make Me Bad"
3:57 Against Me! "I Was a Teenage Anarchist"

My Friday Morning Shuffle:
Birdmonster "The Iditarod"  download 4 songs free here http://birdmonster.posterous.com/
Husker Du "Ain't No Water In the Well"

Ain't no water in the well – Husker Du
Spoon "Utilitarian"
Mudhoney "Dissolve"
Kristin Hersh "Houdini Blues"
Jason Collett "We All Lose One Another"
Against Me! "American Abroad"
Los Campesinos! "It's Never Easy Though, Is It?"
Big Black "Fists Of Love"
Johnny Cash "A Boy Named Sue"
Blur "Sing"

Result? You tell me.

So weird, last week my shuffle played Nirvana, which XRT played in the random time frame I picked, and this week Q101 and myself both played Against Me!.  Pretty good programming by Q101, going after the young testosterone laden boys, but for the playlist that appeals to the 44 year old male sitting on his couch in lincoln square I have to give this one to my playlist.  Me 2 - World 0.
Another oddity in my playlist, the Blur song is from the Trainspotting Soundtrack.  Crazy because yesterday I ran in to someone I know at Chava Cafe who told me he was building a house for Irvine Welsh, who is the author of Trainspotting.  How does Itunes do that?  And two bands with exclamation points in their names?  odd.  also, two live songs, johnny cash is from san quinten and husker du is a live track.

Album of the Week

Shout Out Louds -  Work

Back with their third album, this Swedish band delivers an excellent, solid record from start to finish.  They deserve more attention than they get.  I fell in love with them instantly after hearing their first record, Howl Howl Gaff Gaff, a must own if you like straight up indie pop rock.  They remind me of Buffalo Tom or Idlewild in that they make brilliant, but not flashy, albums that tend to have been overlooked. RIYL - Guitar/Bass/Drums, some acoustic, some cow bells, lots of catchy harmonizing vocals.   Every song is good, there aren't any throwaways.  I think they get overlooked because there isn't anything unique about them, which is too bad.  Writing good catchy songs just isn't enough these days to get noticed, so I'm asking you to notice them.

You can download a couple free remixes of their songs and the single "walls" from their website.  The Passion Pit remix is the better of the two.
