Pitchfork Day 2 preview

It's day two of the fest and the two best shows are bookending, leading off with Free Energy at 1p and finishing with LCD Soundsystem at 8:30p.  Long day in the sun if you don't have the 3 day pass which allows you to leave and re-enter whenever you want.  Single day tickets mean you have to have a plan because if you are young enough to stand outside in 95 degree weather then chances are you probably aren't a parent and don't plan a whole lot.
Saturday July 17 (gates at 12 p.m.):

Again
recommended in RED
1:00 Free Energy (a)  i love these guys, it reminds me of seeing a band at a garage party in high school back when i thought it was the coolest thing in the world for a band to cover lynyrd skynyrd, james murphy from lcd soundsystem produced the record but it sounds nothing like that, it sounds like bell bottoms with no shirt, like a non-ironic beer cozy, like greasy hair, power pop mixed with glam, big star crossed with thin lizzy...they used to be called Hockey Night which is one of those bands that I couldn't understand why nobody was listening to, they sounded very much like pavement, in a really really good way, this new incarnation of the band still has that element but has found their own voice a little more, don't miss it

1:00 Netherfriends (b)
1:45 Real Estate (c)
1:55 Sonny & the Sunsets (b)
2:30 Delorean (a)
2:50 Kurt Vile (b)
3:20 Titus Andronicus (c) see them if you want to see some fast loud pop power punk greatness, you'll bounce, spill your beer, get really sweaty and love it, you might even pump your fist in the air uncontrollably which when you realize what you're doing will cause you to look around, feel silly, pretend you are waving to someone, then stick you hand in your pocket and finally come to realize "wait a sec, everyone has their fist in the air, who cares, i'm a fist pumper" .  "Album of the Week" for me a couple weeks ago.
3:45 Dâm-Funk (b)
4:15 Raekwon (a)
4:45 Smith Westerns (b) my swim coach is the mother of the guitar player in this band, i've seen him as a pool rat since he was about 12 years old, I think he's 20 now, makes me feel old and "parent-y".  If you want to hear a chicago band kicking out some garage rock that they developed in the basement of a north side oakley ave. two flat (that's what we call a duplex in chicago to all you non-chicago peeps), then check them out. They play it like they mean it!!!! one of the few chicago buzz bands going right now.  way to take your eye off brooklyn for one second pitchfork.
5:15 The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (c) a legend, they've influence a ton of bands yet still nobody quite sounds like them, rock and roll
5:45 WHY? (b)
6:15 Wolf Parade (a) Excellent Montreal band just released their 3rd album on Sub Pop, which is one of the few remaining labels where you can buy any record they put out and be pretty confident you'll like it, support those labels

Wolf Parade "Ghost Pressure"
6:45 Bear in Heaven (b) they are one of those borderline "chillwave" bands, might make you a little sleepy if you've been here all day, they say they are from Brooklyn but the main guy is from Atlanta, 99% of bands that say they are from brooklyn really mean "we live in Brooklyn".
7:25 Panda Bear (c) part of the Animal Collective "collective", chillwave, "quiet humble jams" = see one song then go get a beer and check out the vendors like "Rock For Kids" or Chirp Radio
7:40 Freddie Gibbs (b
)
8:30 LCD Soundsystem (a) one of my picks for "Album of the Week" last month, this should be a crazy fun dance party for all
